The spirits of the powerful animals of the jungle could be summoned with magical assemblages like this, which combined a chimpanzee skull and cane into a mysterious whole. Europeans were to be fascinated with the power of such constructions to evoke very deep feelings that have no rational explanation but that get us in touch with our unconscious emotions.
