The Sauk and Fox indians from near St. Louis ceded land in Illinois, Wisconsin & Missouri to the USA in return for presents worth $2,234.50 and an annuity of $1000. However, tribal councils repudiated the treaty. In 1832 under the leadership of Black Hawk the Fox and Sauk bands in Illinois declared war. These busts were probably done in Washington 1837.
