"Meeting and market hall. Built 1740-2 from a plan by Smibert. Funded by merchant Peter Faneuil. Damaged by fire 1761; rebuilt according to Smibert plan. Enlarged (3rd floor and 4 more bays) and cupola moved 1805-6, by Bulfinch. Here American colonists protested the Sugar Act of 1764, establishing the principle of no taxation without representation."
