Pío de Jesus Pico IV was born into poverty at the San Gabriel Mission, California, in 1801. He was at various times businessman cattle rancher and politician. He served as the last Mexican governor of California in 1845 and later on the Los Angeles City Council. 'El Ranchito' was first built in 1853 but wiped out in the flood of 1883. He rebuilt it on a more modest scale and lived there till his death in 1894.
