"Ulugh Beg (1394-1449) was a ruler, diplomat, mathematician and an astronomer but he was most famous for the latter achievement. He constructed an observatory with a three-story marble sextant outside Samarkand which also had two other giant instruments. Famous medieval astronomers are known to have worked there and the calculations they made were considered scientifically valid until the 20th century. "
