Charles Albert, King of Sardinia from 1831-1849 declared war on Austria and gave his people a constitution. His revolt was crushed, however, and he abdicated in favor of his son Victor Emanuel. The Risorgimento refers to a series of revolts that led to the unification of Italy. It started in 1871.
