One of the twelve Deva guardians of the 4 directions, the half directions, up and down, the sun and the moon. They all have flaming mandorlas and are part of the iconography of esoteric Buddhism. This figure holds the sun and is thus Nitten (Indian Surya) and he wears a vajra (thunderbold) in his headdress. He is also known as Nikko or Sunlight Bosatsu.
