The Winter Palace was built by Rastrelli (finished 1762). Karl Rossi designed and built Palace Square (1819-1829). The Alexander Column was designed by August Ricard de Montferrand and was erected in 1834 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon in the War of 1812.
