In 1839 a group of slaves on board the Amistad rebelled and took control of the ship. They were later apprehended and were tried in 1840. Their plight was advertised by the abolitionists. The trial was won by the Africans with the court holding that they had been illlegally captured since the international slave trad hade been abolished.
