Memory for Slaves. Full view.
20th c Tanzanian Expressionist Sculpture
(c. 1967 - )
Stone Town (Mji Mkongwe). Zanzibar. Tanzania.
"The sculpture shows a manacled slave family sunk in a holding cell. Zanzibar was one of the largest ports in the Indian Ocean slave trade. Slaves were shipped north to Oman and India, east to the Dutch Indies, south to Madagascar and South Africa. It is estimated that less than a third survived the long march from inland and the packed and unsanitary conditions in the holding cells and the transport ships."
