Mangapwani. Zanzibar. Tanzania.
After the abolition of slavery in Stone Town in 1873, slavers made places to hide slaves to avoid British patrol ships. A black market developed in Zanzibar 37 miles from the mainland. Slaves were kept in secret underground chambers then at dusk were shipped to Arabia and India. Most went north to the Arabian Gulf. Purportedly built by Mohammed bin Nassur al-Alawi.
