Civilization is difficult to define in any final sense, but it occurs when groups of men and women live together in some sort of cooperative community that has risen above the economic subsistence level to a degree which makes it possible for members of the group to devote themselves to activities other than the gathering of food. For example, to such things as the speculation about the relation of man to the powers of the universe and to the creation of a symbolic language which will serve to relate the members of the group to those powers and to each other. A shared symbolic language, whether expressed through ritual, art, drama, philosophy, myth or religion, and whether verbal or pictorial, is one of the important attributes of a civilized human community.
