The first reference to a building on this site was in the 10th cetury as the residence of the Moorish rulers, but it was taken over by the Christians in the 12th centtury. It was constantly rebuilt and is a mixutre of Gothic, Maueline and Moorish styles, dating mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries. The facade and the buildings around the central courtyard date from the time of King John I, who began his building campaign in 1415. An additional buildig campaign was begun under King Manuel I i na style dubbed Manuline. The palace was damaged in the great earthquake of 1755 and was restored "in the old style." The tile panels were restored in the 1940s by Raul Lino who added old furniture to the palace, which has become a National Monument.
