Originally intended to be used as an underground canal to transport coal from the upper mines, supplies of natural tar (bitumen) with commercial value as a wood preservative, shellac, fuel for oil lamps and medicine was discovered during construction. Wells dug along the path of the tunnel produced 4500 gallons of bitumen a week in the beginning. This supply was boiled in cauldrons at the mouth and processed into various products of value at the time. The production slowly dwindled to about 50 gallons a week in the 1820s and tar sales ceased altogether in the 1840s. Tar can still be seen oozing from the walls as shown here.
