The Shay locomotive, named after Ephraim Shay was a workhorse where heavy loads and steep grades were involved. No. 3172 could pull 167 tons of freight up 6% grades. Its advantage over other steam locomotives of the day was a stepped-down gear ratio and a drive shaft connected to several pairs of wheels. This locomotive was last identified by its owners as the Camino-Placerville & Lake Tahoe #2.
