Black pepper (Piper nigrum; also known as white pepper or green pepper) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae. The red fruit turns black when it is dried. It has been used as a spice since antiquity and was always an important part of the spice trade. It was introduced into Zanzibar from the Malabar Coast of India.
