As Harold assumed the crown, Haley's comet made an appearance which was considered to be a very bad omen. In fact, it was, since William was back in Normandy preparing for an invasion of England to punish Harold for breaking his oath. The worried courtiers point upward with meaningful gestures toward the tailed star that somewhat resembles a rocket. All the forms are depicted with quite economical means, but they are all very expressive. Notice the patterns of the tiles on the architectural forms, as well as the expressions on the faces of the courtiers. One cannot help but admire the great talent and skill of the artists who left us this incredible document that not only records an important historical event, but also an important scientific event.
