Bandiagara Escarpment. Mali.
Many Dogon live in a spectacular site, the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali, which has been designated as a world cultural heritage site. This distant view shows four villages, one on the top of the escarpment, one on the side of the cliff, and two a the base. The Dogon retreated to this spectacular, but difficult, site sometime in the 13th century in order to maintain their animist religious beliefs as Muslims tried to convert them.
