Some African art styles, like that of the Fang mask shown in the center, which reduced form to its simplest components, influenced artists like Modigliani and Brancusi. The Modigliani head on the left uses the same exaggerated extension of the nose, which dominates the small eyes and mouth, giving us just the barest indication of the facial features. Brancusi, in the White Negress shown on the right, goes even further, creating a simple egg form to indicate the head, with a circle on the top and a triple pointed form to indicate hair, and an echoing two-pronged form to indicate the lips. While the Modigliani contains echoes of classical Mediterranean sculpture , Brancusi's becomes pure exquisitely balanced geometry.
