Apache medicine men wore costumes like this for the sacred dances they did in connection with their healing ceremonies. The psychological effect created by the medicine man and his mysterious ceremonies played an important role in the healing process. Modern studies have shown that many pathological conditions respond to psychological healing practices. On some of the reservations modern doctors have recognized the power of the Native American medicine men and share healing duties with them.
