At the very right of the inset of this map you can see were the Nok culture was centered, in what is present day northern Nigeria. South of the Nok are the Ife and the Benin that we will examine later. To the west the Dogon, who we already discussed, are settled in what is currently Mali. You can also locate the cultures we will be examining next, the Kingdoms of the Western Sudan. First is Ancient Ghana, and then Mali, with the cities of Timbuktu and Jenna. The ancient empire of Ghana was located between the Senegal and the Niger Rivers, not where present day Ghana is located. The ancient empire of Mali covered what is currently Mali as well as Burkina Faso.
