Berlin. Staatliche Muséen.
These mounted warriors are Parthians. They belong to the same nomadic tribal group as the men that Emperor Wudi's ambassadors encountered in their travels to the West. This group had moved into the area of the old Persian empire and infused it a new vitality into it, which led them into ever greater conflict with the Romans who had replaced the Greeks as the political power in Asia Minor and Syria.
