Original design for the building was by Friedrich August Stüler. After Stüler's death construction of the museum was continued by Strack from 1866-1876. The 1886 bronze equestrian statue of Friedrich Wilhelm IV is by Alexander Calandrelli (1834-1903). The museum building was extensively restored from 1998-2001.
