The cathedral was built to honor the 200,000 Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and Bulgarian solders who died in the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 and 1878. It is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churchs and can hold 10,000 people. The Russian Orthodox church gave the cathedral the relics of the 13th century Russian Prince Alexander Nevsky.
