Thomas Hees served as a diplomat in Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. He negociated the freedom of Dutch slaves and protested the privateering of Duch ships. He sits surronde by the treasures he had acquired in ort aftica. An inscription on the back gives his servant's name and age: "Thomas, the negro, 17 years old."
