Models from real life in Heath Street. Background painted in open air. Workers from the ragged wretch who was never taught to work to the rich who do not have to work with the excavator or navvy at center. Brain workers apart on the right are Thomas Carlyle and Revd F.D. Maurice - founder and principal of Working Mens College where Brown taught. Center piece of solo show 1865. Subject of much interpretation in the literature.
