Sappho & Alcaeus.
19th c British Academic Painting
(Dronriip, 1836 - 1912, Wiesbaden Germany)
Baltimore. Walters Art Museum.
The poet Alcaeus seated on a klismos plays a kithara - the instrument of Apolllo. The marble chairs approximate those in the Theater of Dionysus of Athens. The inscriptions refer to members of the Thiasos - a sacred sorority from Lesbos. The head of Sappho conforms to ancient portraits such as those in the Villa Albani and the Oxford busts according to Swanson 1990.
