"Ancient Varahksha was at the edge of an oasis and was wealthy because of the silk route. Irrigation was necessary; however the river shifted and Varaksha lost its water and its wealth. Irrigation was reestablished by the Russians in the 20th century and cotton growing prospered. However, the diverted water created an ecological disaster at Lake Aural and its surroundings. "
