Algeria was a Department of France, but Moslems were not allowed to vote. After WWII when many Algerian soldiers had died for France, Muslims expected to be given the vote. When they did not, the Muslims rebelled in early May. Many Algerians were slaughtered by the French as they supressed the revolt.
