In German 'Zopf und Perucke' (Pigtail and Periwig) was a pejorative term for the late Rococo. The painting is one of 19 designs for murals commissioned by Ludwig I to decorate the exterior of his Munich museum the Neue Pinakothek. The large-scale exterior frescoes glorified Ludwig for his patronage and artistic policy.
