"60 to 75 women and children were held in small cells like this. They were often given no food or drink. Zanzibar was one of the largest ports in the Indian Ocean slave trade. Slaves were shipped north to Oman and India, east to the Dutch Indies, south to Madagascar and South Africa. It is estimated that less than a third survived the long march from inland and the packed and unsanitary conditions in the holding cells and the transport ships."
