Rossi designed and built Palace Square (1819-1829). The Winter Palace was built by Rastrelli (finished 1762). The Imperial Guards Staff Building was built by Bryullov (1837-1843). The Alexander Column was designed by de Montferrand and was erected in 1834 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon in the War of 1812.
