Skeletons Warming Themselves.

James ENSOR (1860 - 1949)
19th c
74.8 cm x 60 cm
Oil on Canvas
Oostende. West-Vlaanderen. Belgium.
Fort Worth. Kimbell Art Museum.
In this work three clothed skeletons gather around a stove on which is written 'Pas de feu; en trouverez vous demain?' [Quote: The fire is out. Will you find any tomorrow?]. The skeletons are accompanied by a palette & brush; a violin; & a lamp -- symbols of the artist; the musician; & the writer. Possibly the fire refers to artistic inspiration or supporting patronage. X-ray studies of this work reveal another finished picture beneath this scene: It is a bust-length portrait of a young girl probably painted before 1883.
