Massacre under the Triumvirate.
Niccoló dell' ABATE (aka Nicolo dell' Abate)
16th c French Mannerist Painting
(Modena (Italy), c. 1512 - 1571, France)
Beauvais. Musée des Beaux-Arts.
The work portrays the Roman civil wars showing one of the massacre carried out by Mark Antony, Octavius and Lepidus when they became triumvirs in 43 BC. However, the work refers to the massacre of St. Bartholemew's day in 1561 when the French anti-Protestant triumvirate, Constable of Montmorency, Jacques d'Albon de Saint Andre and the Duc de Guise , ordered the slaughter of many Protestant lords.
