3rd-9th c Pre-Columbian: Mesoamerican Mayan (Classic) Sculpture
(active Classic/ Post Classic c. 200 - 1520)
Two 'pot-belly' sculptures of Chabij or Bijac phase manufacture were found buried underneath Copan Stelae 4 and 5 (erected in the Late Classic), indicating that sculpture carving did take place at Copan in the Late Preclassic or Early Classic. An inscription on Stelae 4 and 1 cite an event which occurred in AD 159 that may have to do with the founding of Copan as a kingdom.
