Stele H, probably the best preserved stele at Copan portrays 18 Rabbit in an unusual costume that combines the jaguar-skin kilt often worn by kings with a long beaded skirt usually found on images of women; it is the only portrait without sacrificial implements associated with the drawing of blood from male genitalia. The symbolic message appears to be that Maya kingship entails roles such as nurturing that might otherwise be associated only with women. The text on Stele H may be a continuation of that on Stele A.
