Copan. stele D and Temple II on the Grand Plaza.
3rd-9th c Pre-Columbian: Mesoamerican Mayan (Classic) Sculpture
(active Classic/ Post Classic c. 200 - 1520)
Following the death of the 13th ruler 18 Rabbit Copan entered a period of seeming dormancy - no new stelae were erected. Scholars had noted that after the placement of Stele D in 126.96.36.199.0 (AD 736), no further free-standing monuments were erected until stele M, in 188.8.131.52.0 (AD 756). This was taken by some to mean that Copan went into a decline after the loss of their distinguished ruler, and was unable to marshal public labor for monuments until nearly 20 years after his death.
