Students should become aware of the growing resistance to the papacy and understand the challenges to its power over the spheres of religion, politics and economics. Study what led up to Luther's ex-communication, the revolt of the peasants, and how the Reformation spread throughout northern Europe. Study the Catholic Counter-Reformation, the revival of the Inquisition, and the religious wars that followed. Study how Germanic Europe became Protestant, and Latin Europe stayed Catholic and loyal to Pope. Study the age of kings and what divine right was, especially in relation to French monarchy.
