Students will study the Age of Exploration, starting with Spanish and Portuguese explorations in the New World. Learn about the routes taken by the explorers by looking at maps then and now. Study the Spanish conquest and the terrible effects on the great civilizations they found in the Americas. Study conflict between England and Spain, the rise of the Northern European seaports, the role the Jews played in commerce and trade as they were welcomed back into Holland and England in the 1600s. Learn about the origins of modern capitalism and the development of a market economy in 17th c Europe. Study the Enlightenment, impact on future of Western political thought, in Europe and the U.S. Trace Greek thought through Rome, the Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution and to the ideas in the Declaration of Independence, discovering ideas of John Locke, Montesquieu and the American founders. Study priniciples of Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights, and the American Declaration of Independence.
